Ultrasonic Immersion Tanks for Non Destructive Testing

Tecnitest NDT Ultrasonic Immersion Tanks can be used for industrial Non Destructive Testing (NDT) applications, research projects… and training.

The modular design of the ultrasonic immersion tank systems allows upgrading, easily matching dimensional, kinematic and technique related specifications. The software of the system, Visualscan, allows for user test parameter set up, scan programming and result evaluation.

System Series TRITON

The Triton Series Ultrasonic Immersion Tanks are built using a robust extruded aluminium frame with high movement precision and accuracy at all the available speeds.

The UT inspection can be pulse echo, through transmission or double through transmission.

The basic mechanical concept for the tanks can be applied from lengths ranging from 1m to 15m and widths ranging from 0.3m to 3m. There is also the potential for easy upgrading at any time.

The standard system has three motor controlled linear axis, X,Y and Z, however other manual or motor controlled, angular or external axis can be installed.

The overall design of the immersion tanks guarantees compliance with applicable EU standards and gives the best system performance whilst avoiding induced electrical noise.

Furthermore, designs to specific customer requirements can be incorporated

The Triton range of systems comprises a series of immersion tanks for ultrasonic inspection with the following standard dimensions (scan lengths)… different dimensions, up to 15 m length (X axis) and specific requirements can be considered, with the general characteristics and details referred to below:

Sonatest DFDs can also be used with this equipment The customer may also specify a DFD or indeed any Phased Array Equipment that he wishes to use providing that there are digital outputs to enable us to generate a ‘C’ scan and the relevant data to be able to produce ‘A’ and ‘B’ scans.


‘Visualscan’ from Tecnitest is a complete, dedicated software package using MS Windows for ultrasonic inspection systems.  It can be used with Windows 7, 8 or 10.

The software comprises of user-friendly interface modules for motion programming and control, data acquisition in all operation modes, signal presentation in single or multiple window frames and evaluation of resultant images.


A, B and C-scan presentations are available with data recording and reporting functions. A complete set of evaluation tools are included: zoom; histogram; area measurements etc. Systems performance is optimised, in terms of resolution and scanning speed, due to the customised data acquisition algorithms.


The system’s electronics include a 19” standard rack or desktop box including a PC, a high-speed A/D conversion card and a motor driver board for up to 4, 6 or 8 axes. The system also includes, as standard, integrated emergency stops along with other system safety elements.


  • Stiff extruded free standing aluminium frame (black panel covered).
  • Belt and/or ball bearing drive axis with position accuracy better than ±0.1 mm depending on the size of the tank and the accuracy required.
  • Independent Perspex or Stainless Steel tank, depending on the size of the tank.
  • Bottom glass with adjustable supports for double through transmission tests.
  • Interchangeable probe holder, manually adjustable (0º-90º XZ or YZ) and additional fine adjustment of relative probe position.
  • Scanning speed up to 500 mm/s (linear axis X, depending on the actual total length).
  • Optional: external axis (turn) attachment and support (Z or X direction).
  • From 2 up to 8 motorized axis (standard), expandable. Axis with traction through pinion, rack or belt.
  • High accuracy movement to ± 0.1mm with a minimum index of 0.1mm
  • Optional contour following equipment.


  • Electronic controller-based commercial industrial PLC commanded by an independent computer. This architecture enables updating the computer operating system and programs easily and ensures that the movement of equipment is made more reliable and secure.
  • Encoders in X and Y axes for acquisition synchronization (also θ when an external axis is available).
  • Desktop PC (optionally, in industrial rack).
  • Low noise electronics for ultrasonic acquisition including a socket box on the system bridge frame.

Visualscan is a dedicated application software for automatic ultrasonic inspection systems under MS Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7, 8 and 10 reliable, easy to operate and intuitive… at the same time complying with requirements of common application standards (Airbus, for inspection of composite materials).

Ultrasonic Immersion Tanks screens

The software package includes a module to program the particular scan (planar or rotating) and the inspection area definition, the ultrasonic acquisition module and a signal evaluation module with different tools. With specific wizards, the user can access the ultrasonic equipment to setup all the parameters relevant to the test.

The programming module allows the definition of the test area by just clicking on the screen, the manual movement of axis by clicking the suitable window buttons and the zeroing of any of the available motorized axis.

The user can select the scanning index, the operation mode (inspection technique), the number of active channels… and include other part related data to put together in the suitable report which, automatically, is stored in the memory of the system PC (via Ethernet, and also a remote PC in real time).

The acquisition module includes the different functions to synchronize the position and movement of the probe with the pulse trigger, for an optimized data acquisition and true real time C-scan presentation (standard presentation): this feature guaranties the superior quality and accuracy of the test performed. In addition, the inspection can be stopped and continued any time without loss of data.

Finally, the evaluation module enables the data presentation in correlated windows for A, B and C-scans including the indication of space coordinate, echo amplitude or attenuation and time of flight or distance, depending on the case. This package includes a complete menu of software tools:

  • Variable zoom (in and out, with mouse rolling or dedicate window buttons)
  • Scroll (with sliding bar or mouse clicking)
  • Direct Reading indicator of position, time of flight, distance, echo amplitude or attenuation relative to the mouse position on the window.
  • Simultaneous window presentation (waterfall or mosaic) with adjustable window size and position.
  • A-scan presentation with indication of echo distance and amplitude in two adjustable gates and corresponding with the actual position of the mouse on the suitable B or C-scan presentation.
  • B-scan presentation (simple or accumulated) in pulse-echo tests, corresponding to the actual (live mode) mouse position on the suitable C-scan.
  • Colour and grey scales (up to 120 levels) available with independent adjustment of origin and number of applicable colour levels (ref dB scale).
  • Area measurement (polygonal) and indication of distances on screen (point to point as user defined).
  • Histogram generation with values of amplitudes or attenuations within defined user polygonal.
  • Hysteresis correction in C-scan presentations (setup and post-processing).
  • Image rotation and inversion.
  • Image filtering (11 filters available) for B and C-scan post processing.
  • Menu function to open and close data files, file compression, etc.
  • Window or area image capture creating bmp format files.
  • Text insertion on window presentations.
  • Via Ethernet, the software package allows authorised users (password protected) data file communication for remote evaluation and the technical system support on-line for diagnosis and maintenance.
